The IIconics

The IIconics
Ink, watercolor and liquid acrylic on 11″ x 15″ watercolor paper

Seeing as it’s a painting of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, the IIconics, I wanted to do a, wait for it, iconic painting. From a visual perspective, ‘iconic’ means getting something down to its essence with as little extraneous detail as possible. So for this one I went with a stripped-down color palette, more illustrative than painterly and a bolder composition overall. I wanted to tell the tale of their ‘Iconic Pose’, of their irreverent nature, while also getting their beauty across.

After doing the blue, red, and tan colors and the ink, I felt like it wasn’t really balanced but also noted that my approach evoked some Peter Max vibes. After noting that, I added some Max-esque clouds in the background giving that balance and leaning into my unintended stylistic influence.
