I had the great fortune to be invited to do a piece for this building in Kansas City, KS. Doing a big street art piece is something I’ve been wanting to do for about a year now and I’ve been planning it out in my head what I would do. Once I was selected, I reached out to my friend Dana Hill, who as Louise LeMans has become one of the more notable retro models Kansas City. She graciously posed for some reference photos (more on the other photos, and what they’re to be used for, you’ll just have to wait and find out).
The weather cleared up while I also had a long weekend scheduled, and this Saturday I went out to get started. First, I got a couple cans of colored primer and rolled those onto the wall. The piece I had planned would be all figurative without a background, so these flat colors were my answer.
I made this minimal stencil to get my guide-lines down. Working as big as I am here (the biggest I’ve ever worked), it’s hard to eyeball the proportions. You have to stand back quite a ways and then get back up close. To save on time, I made this.
Here’s the guidelines up on the wall, once the paint dried. Time for the real work to start!
