Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio
Ink, watercolor, spray and acrylic on 30″ x 22″ watercolor paper

I’m excited that Rey Mysterio is back in the fold. For one thing, he’s really fun to paint and I can push things in different directions with him visually. Also, he has that x-factor where the fans connect with him on a very personal level. For instance, my brother is almost 15 years younger than me and as a kid Mysterio was his very favorite. He’d put on a mask and jump around like he was Rey himself.

I’m willing to bet you know someone or are someone who did the same.

For a long time Rey Mysterio was the closest thing we had to seeing a superhero on TV. There were occasional movies back then but they weren’t great, and the same with television. If you wanted to see a hero fight the bad guys, flying around in the air and overcoming great obstacles, it was Mister 619. It’s easy to take for granted nowadays but back then it was genuinely special.
